Duration: 6'

Ensemble: 1142 2422 11 1cb

Commissioned by the National Institute of Concerts and Östgöta Symphon

Hekas! was written in 1992, as a result of a commission from Östgöta

Symphonic Band. The piece is six minutes long and is scored for an orchestra of 1 fl, 1 ob, 4 cl, 2 bsn, 3 sax, 2 horns, 4 tr, 3 tbn, 1 bar, 1 tb, 1 cb, 2 perc.

The title comes from a procession cry used within the Elusinian mysteries,

but the piece has no programmatical content. The word hekas ultimately derives from a sanscrit word meaning “word of power”.

Hekas! was first performed in Linköping by Östgöta

Symphonic Band and Per Engström. It has been recorded on the CD Östgöta Symphonic Band (SÖM9202) and also on the BIS label.
